Maybe too much sun earlier in the season. Should not need frost protection, except when there is a danger of lingering cold freezing the roots. Do not over-winter inside a heated room, protect only from deep, penetrating cold.

If it went from shade (indoors?) to sun with leaves that were formed in the shade, and there was bright weather after the move it may have been burned by the sudden dramatic increase in light exposure.
