I'm in Zone 3 too. My toad lily and brunnera are not showing yet, but I have quite a few pulmonaria blooming already. What kind did you plant? I've had trouble with David Ward. Tried it twice and it died both times. Others, like Bressingham Blue, do much better and seed themselves as well.

My foxglove up north in zone 3 had a good winter. I, too, put them in last spring, but they had excellent snowcover this year and looked so intact it kind of threw me. New (real) growth at the crown was visible when I was last up there in early May. Given how cold it has been, I wouldn't have expected them to show much that early, so I'd watch for them for a bit yet. My brunnera down here in zone 4a still hasn't shown up and I'm a little concerned about it. Very weird spring!

My toad lilies did not come up either and I bought one for my mom last year also and hers did not come back yet either.

I have only once had a toad lily come back- I love them- but I gave up on them. I have lost all of my brunnera also- never comes back- I have seen others Jack Frost doing fine in my neighborhood.... I usually do well with Foxglove- but after carefully exposing new green growth this year- over 20 all died! Every single one in several places in the yard!!! I was surprised by Mrs Moon pulmonaria which came back beautifully- usually I lose all of them also. My last try with Trout lillies came and went with this spring also- Looks like it wasn't the best year for plants in my yard- but still far from the worst! I will try to keep a little pinch of faith going for these plants and their return-

That is really interesting. I had two brunnera (an old variety, not Jack Frost et al) for about 10 years and the winter before this one, lost them both. Put in two new ones last spring and I'm really wondering if they are going to appear at all. Hope my foxglove up north didn't suffer the same fate - so sorry you lost yours, Julie. I'm not giving up on any of it yet - what self-respecting plant wouldn't hide its head with the weather we've had the last few weeks?

Went to the Arboretum sale today and we all wondered what we were doing there, buyers and volunteers alike! A hearty bunch, I guess. Had fun despite the rain. The daylily selection was even better than advertised as the HSM folks were out there with bareroot fans for sale in addition to the ones on the plant list. The lack of good planting weather sure did inhibit my buying, though - I wasn't sure when I could get them in the ground.

So far I am very pleased with what is happening in my gardens. Put a lot of new stuff in last summer thanks to all the trades and such. All is up except my Digitalis Mertonensis. Got them from Bluestone, I think, and they are supposed to be a perennial variety of foxglove. I will wait a bit longer. Other than that everything is up but I did lose mu Coreopsis "Early Sunrise" and my Geum "Mrs. Bradshaw". Not surprised, I have not had much luck with these in the past, so I am hereby giving up on them. Cool, now I have a couple of empty spots to fill! LOL

O.K I went and checked- 10 year old toad lily is up and 6 inches- the variety is Miyazaki and it has been very hardy for me. Jack Frost Brunnera planted last year: 1 up, 1 dead. Digitalis I gave up on- planted every variety possible, only "Foxy" ever came back and not reliably. Tried protecting the Mertonensis with foam pots because I heard the crown freezes and rots easily but nothing worked for me. I love them though so post some pictures for me when they come up for you and I'll admire from afar.
