In general, Japanese maples are not the easiest trees to strike from cuttings - the success rate is usually low. However, your little guy does show some healthy looking bark and viable buds so may be it will succeed.

I would store it somewhere protected over winter. J. maple roots - grafted or not - can be very vulnerable to cold temps. Keep somewhere where the temperatures stay between 45 and just above freezing.
