Maryland's a diverse state, so it depends where you live as much as I think it does on the weather for the year. It sure won't be the same for Deep Creek Lake and Ocean City!

    Try this.

Relax. First frost probably won't come until October. Usually it's around Halloween for me.

    Yahoooo!!! Halloween?!?!?!

I knew it would be later than Boston, this is GREAT!

I'm going to plant some more popcorn and carrots.

I'll bet the kids here don't even have to wear snowsuits under their halloween costumes for trick or treat :-))

Growing up in South Jersey, my kids were just as likely to sweat under their costumes! Growing up in CT, I had to wear the winter coat! I just love our long growing season!!

It varies considerably year after year where I am. Some years we may have an early first frost as early as October 10th, and on rare occasions not until mid-November. I find that tender plants can sometimes ignore the first light frosts with a little bit of protection like putting paper bags over veggie plants, and you can get a longer fall harvest.

Last Halloween was pretty warm as I remember. My seven year old daughter was a cheerleader, and she didn't have to wear any jacket.

I think here on the Eastern Shore MD (Easton) should be much warmer than Baltimore and DC metro area, unfortunately we often get our first frost around Oct.6 and much earlier around Salisbury Oct. 1...How could that be? I guess, it all depends on the location!

That's weird. I live in Prince William County and we never get frost quite that early. Maybe mid-October at the earliest? I'm trying to recall. October can be a funny month, eighty degrees one day and sixty the next.

frederick MD - averages over the past 6 years are between
    Oct 9th and November 15th.

more often than not the first frost is also the first freeze.

Lee Ann, I live about 10 miles from you and we generally have a frost here by mid Oct. Tho Last year we had our 1st frost around Nov 1. I think that's rare. More often than not, we have a mild frost by mid Oct and then we get a couple nice weeks of indian summer. For that reason I've learned to use row covers so I can squeeze a little more produce from the garden.

Having lived in Boston myself for many yrs, I can say that I really enjoy the weather here in Nov. The sunny days gives me an opportunity to get my garden cleaned up in comfort before the really cold weather sets in. January-March is much like Boston weather.

Peggy is right--I've noticed the same thing. First frost was late last year; we usually get in mid-Oct.
Man, how can I forget the memorable night (last year) of digging up cannas in my front yard in front of all the traffic sitting at the light? Amazingly enough, no one called for a wagon.
