I prefer the weigela because they bloom early in the season and mine don't need much pruning; the spireas bloom late (which I don't really need with my hostas) and I'm not a big fan of the way they grow. They (spireas) were also damaged by the heavy snowfall we had this year, and the weigela's were fine.
