Two of my neighbors have the same problem here in SW Mpls. One had numerous green larvae eating the leaves (dont know what kind). The other went to Bachmann's and was given an insecticidal soap. Insects are not my area, Hope someone else replies.

Did some searching on the web (should have done it sooner) and I think sawfly larvae might be your insect. Morton Arboretum's website mentions their appearance on azaleas there. If they are the culprit then insecticidal soap or Neem oil are the answer. Just a thought. You still might want to talk to an expert.

Karenn3, you've found the answer! The picture on the Morton Arb website is identical. I'm off to get the neem oil today, since one of them has been completely defoliated and the other is heading there fast. Must be a neighborhood-wide problem --- I'm near 50th and Penn.

I had the same thing happen last year on the White Lights only. I found lots of little green caterpillars. I forgot to check early this year and just noticed today all the leaves are gone again. Rats!!

Am in Eden Prairie and have the same problem on my white lights azalea. They also seem to favor my columbine. Agree with the insecticidal soap suggestion. When it's really bad I've also used the all-purpose rose spray by Ortho.
