McGrath used to be the editor of Rodale's Organic Gardening. Quite the dust-up when he left/was forced out -- the handwringing threads on the organic forum went on for months. I've heard a few of his WTOP commentaries, and can't recall any of them being particularly impressive.

Yeah, you might kill a few baby grubs, but anyone who thinks golf shoes are god's gift to grub control needs to put a little less tequila in the margeritas.

I worked with McGrath at the Philly Folk Festival for a few years. He has been known to tell a good one now and then.

It was about a year after McGrath took over OG that I cancelled my subscription. I didn't know he'd left--I guess I wasn't the only one who was underwhelmed with his attitude.

Well, if he's telling a good one, he repeats it in several of his articles.

I was looking through some of my gardening catalogues and looked at those shoes. Golf shoes my round buummy! They're 1-1.5" spikes! But I still see someone having to River dance on the lawn.

What's exactly wrong with this fellow? There seems to be no love lost with you folks. I only hear him on WTOP, so don't know a lot of "scoop." on him. Frankly, don't care to, either, since so far his blurbs are fine.

Those spike shoes are ridiculous! You have to march around the lawn like a high-stepping majorette when you wear them. My husband bought them, wore them once and never again! They sound like a good idea but in practice, they're not!

I'm surprised at the vehemence this thread has generated. Both Mike McGrath and those silly shoes. I was kind of kidding, because the whole idea engenders hilarious pictures in my mind.

Interesting, though.
