It's a real shame too because it could really put a crimp in the trading. I saw some Gold Standards that were infected last season at a nursery and the virus was very distictive in that there was no doubt in my mind that's what the hosta had. But don't completely panic if you are checking your hosta and you see similar symptoms- frost damage can mimic some of the same look (of course I don't have to tell the Minnesota forum what frost damage looks like).

They passed inspection. So far so good.

Hmmmm- I have a Francis William that is looking quite unusual this year- but not like the difference that so clearly shows in that photo-
I am so sorry for your plant- but I thank you very much for the iformational set of photos! They say more to me for determining a visual diagnosis than many of the articles I have read about this disease.

I am glad I started this stream. I've learned two things. I hadn't know about HVX and I had assumed that The Morris Garden was a garden store. I can't find it on the web, guess it isn't.

What is this world coming to, you can't even have safe hosta's any more?

Julie - It is unlikely that FW has HVX. This super-lovely hosta is often totally intolerant of even a tiny bit of direct sun (especially early in the year). All sorts of leaf scorch or weird looking damage appears when exposed to the sun.

It is fairly easy to avoid buying HVX. Stay away from the Big Box stores. Albeit, they are great places to see HVX, especially in their Gold Standards. Don't try to go with the cheapest and best bargains. Stick with nurseries who specialize in Hostas and are knowledgeable about HVX. The Hosta specialty nurseries take great pains to keep their stock free of the virus. It is entirely possible that the nursery mentioned in this thread is one of the 'good guys'. I would check it out if I didn't live so far away.

I think I have said this before but will say it again. HVX is not a disease that will leap from the infected Hosta to all your other Hostas and plants. It doesn't work that way. The symptoms of HVX are easily recognized and appear early on in the growing season. Destroy the infected plant and that is the end of the problem. Incidentally, it is always a good idea to keep any new plant, especially a Hosta that is known to be susceptible to HVX, slightly isolated and in its pot for a month or so before placing it in your garden. Saves you the trouble of digging it out later.

Well said. I spoke to the lady that I bought my hosta from and she told me that the man she gets her plants from specializes in hostas, and passed inspections, she is going to talk to him on Monday and let him know and I told her to check my photos out...and she said she would. The hosta library has more photos on there site with infected hostas.

Yes! Julie, I've been looking for sales like this! I have all the varieties available at the big box stores and the parking lot greenhouses. Even my local greenhouses don't have enough variety in hostas so this is great information. Thank you for taking the time to post it!

Why sure- I just learned of another- with a big variety and great prices- the weekend after this coming one, but I havn't gotten the details yet. I believe it is way far south of the cities though- I will do my best to post more on this one also.

Ok- still no news on the far south sale- and bad news on the Hosta Direct sale- They were hit hard with a hail storm on the 13th and have decided to NOT have the sale the next 2 weekends. Keep looking to the web site for more info- I will try to get the south sales info later tonight-

I received a card in the mail today from Global Gardens and they are having June Hosta Days from June 17 - 26, M-Sat 10 - 6 Sun 12 - 6. I bought some plants there 3 years ago. It has changed hands since then so I can't report on what it is like now. Their address is 26820 Hwy 169 in Zimmerman (sorry it is North of the Twin Cities).

One more time for Hostas_and_Hockey and addictedtohosta- I was able to purchase a couple sight unseen-and am quite pleased at the cost of these hosta- $9 for praying hands- 12 for blue mouse ears- 10 for patomic pride- 12 for korean snow- 10 for cats eyes- all prices 15 or less- good variety of uncommon hosta- over 80 listed- have been told all plants sold as clumps- not single eyed plants-
