To my knowledge, there are only a few marginally hardy bamboos, here: some of the Fargesia species, like nitida and muriale, and Phyllostachys aureoblahblah (yellow groove). Black bamboo shouldn't even have a chance, or the moso's(I think), but stranger things have happened.

I had F. nitida since 1999, and it grew, but never really amounted to much more than a bamboo novelty. It tried to bloom in 2005, when the species bloomed all over the world. But our season was too short and/or it didn't have the vigor. I thought it died last year, but this spring I see one tiny little new sprig. Hazzah! A major feat in that maple root infested garden.
