moonflower seeds

I live in southeast GA, near the coast and bought some moonflower seeds. I've rarely had much luck with seeds in the past, but I'm trying again. Anyhow, on the package, the instructions were to "nick seeds and soak in warm water overnight." What does "nick" mean? I assume it means to cut them sort of. Am I correct? Also, would it be better for me to plant them in an oblong planter for now or to put them directly into the ground?

It's already HOT here; I've been swimming since April, if that makes any difference.

Also, do I plant them in full sun, partial shade, or what?

Thanks!
