I know I see Hummers all over the Monarda and Phlox in my yard! Monarda is soo easy to tug out if it gets too large- and when dried it makes a tasty tea! I wouldn't worry about using it at all=

Also, there are some deep burgundy bee-balms out there that stay lower and don't spread fast at all (wish mine actually spread more) and if you put in phlox, there are many types of that as well - creeping for early spring, wild for spring, and tall garden for mid-summer. So many choices! DO put in bulbs - lilies are good too if you wish some summer bulb bloomage. Daffodils are tricky to start here sometimes, but are wonderful, grape hyacinth the same I've found, but crocus oh... I love crocus, and again there are so many types from early to late bloom. Mind the cosmos! They can easily take over an area as well :)

Asters and Helen's flower are good for late summer/fall color.

Lupines are easy to grow from seed. Delphinium is another good choice.

Milkweed is good both as food for monarch caterpillars and as a nectar source for the butterflies--and marsh milkeed (Asclepias incarnata) has purplish flowers that look nice and smell nice too. Bronze fennel is a good food source for swallowtail caterpillars. Many of the native Liatris species are butterfly magnets, as is the South American Verbena bonariensis. Cardinal flower is a good hummingbird attractant. Adult butterflies also like a shallow, muddy area--they get minerals from it.
