Usually around Thanksgiving. Depends on the type of grass, and temperature fluctuations. I usually fertilize one last time after the first frost. At this time, I am also mowing to help mulch some of the leaves; it is easier than raking.

Yes do not go into the winter with tall grass or leaves lying on the lawn. You will have more work to do in the spring and your grass will get off to a poor start. Still mowing in Baltimore County, Steve

Thanks! I don't have many leaves after all that wind we have had lately. My husband is going to mow this weekend. He just was not sure when to stop. We have had some frosty mornings up here (Rising Sun) and was not sure that would kill the grass. I admit, mowing the leaves is WAY easier than raking!

We have a zoyza lawn and mowed for the last time a week ago. Surprisingly it hasn't turned straw colored yet and we've had a number of frosts.

I suspect that this recent cold snap will start to turn our lawns brown. I was actually out spreading fertilizer last weekend. Yea it is probably two months later than the ideal time. I was pretty busy during the fall, about a month ago I saw some organic fertilizer on clearance at Lowes so I purchased some and I just go around to spreading it last weekend. I have not mowed my lawn in over a month but some of my neighbors were mowing a week ago.

Tip: late fall is a great time to snatch bags of grass clipping from the curbside for composting because they are likely to already be mixed with shredded leaves. If they are not already mixed then there are plenty of bags of leaves available as well.
