Is Wax Myrtle evergreen or deciduous here?

Hello,

I have read several conflicting bits of information on the Myrica Cerifera. The Virginia Cooperative Extension lists it as deciduous while the US National Arboretum lists it as evergreen. Does anyone have experience with this shrub/plant?

I am looking for a small, evergreen tree to add some privacy and shade to by back yard. Do you think I'll be able to limb up the wax myrtle (into a tree form) and walk under it? The aroma would be an added bonus.

Hi amiamiamia...Myrica cerifera is evergreen in 9 out of 10 winters in the Richmond area. Even in the 10th winter is retains some of its foliage. You can certainly limb up waxmyrtle to be able to walk underneath it but you will have to be diligent removing all of the watersprouts to keep it this way. I wouldn't consider it a plant that is going to offer you much shade unless you plant it right where the west sun sets. Let me know if you need any other information.

Mine is evergreen. It thrives in sun & light shade, although faster in sun. Mine has about a 6" trunk.
