Hi,

I have a pot of alstromemeria that I grow on the deck every summer and put in our attached garage every fall and it does really well. We live in central Wisconsin. The garage does get down to freezing in the coldest part of winter but I set the pot close to the housewall and cover it up with a blanket.

hmmmm ... never thought of planting in a pot .... there aren't any alstroemeria that can over-winter in the ground in z5??????????

I planted Alstromeria 'Glory of the Andes' (also marked Peruvian Lily)last summer in a bed with full sun. It grew and bloomed beautifully last year- and though its very early this year- it seems to be coming back up just fine:)I'll keep you posted- but I bought it at a very reputable nursery who assured me that this one variety of alstromeria was hardy to zone 5.

I've been growing 'Laura' for 6 years now.

i will be on the look-out for either glory of the andes or laura ... do you have it planted in a protected area in your garden? .. did you start it from seed or buy as a plant? .. do you think i will be able to find it at a local nursery, or is it too specialized? .. mailorder catalog?

I will also be interested to hear how it goes. After reading a forum here (http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/farnorth/msg0314304424950.html ), I am trying the short bush (Princess?) variety in pots and will attempt to winter over in the basement. No garage. They are so glorious. They are too expensive to just use as annuals.

Next year I will look for these hardier varieties and the possibility of planting and wintering in southern Wisconsin.

Alstro are Erratic,pots are i think a bit too small
