I was supposed to take a ton of rose cuttings this year and have decided it's about a month too late (trip overseas sort of messed everything up that way). I do know some folks who keep them inside during the winter and get them to root, but I've not had good luck with that - just me though :)

Dirr says hardwood cuttings of shrub type Lonicera's(honeysuckle) will root. Whether he meant summer hardwood or winter he does not say. My guess is winter, so I would wait until leaves fall and take cuttings Nov-Jan.

Purple smoke tree? Bite your tongue, there is no such thing! You have a purple smoke bush. (Yes, I am picky, and you can laugh at me all you want.) But it is a different species altogether. Dirr says softwood cuttings, so wait until next June.

I defer to our rose expert (at least compared to me) for Rosa glauca.

Suzinnia, you might try an alternative method to making cuttings from your purple smoke bush, and I don't think it would hurt to start now. If you have any flexible branches low to the ground, bend them down and bury them lightly and then either peg or weight them down, watering the soil at that point. (Leave 6" or more of the end free and upright to become the "new" plant.) Chances are good that roots will develop at the buried point and if they have, you can cut the connection to the main plant and move the newly rooted section (say, next spring or summer). I've used this technique to make several new plants of my smoke bush after the plant was kind enough to demonstrate this technique on its own.

Rick, I would never even so much DREAM of laughin at you (really Im laughing with you...) and I consider my self "putched" as my german grandma would have said. I was thinkin at work later that it was bush, but you must understand that now that its taller than I am.....its very difficult to see it as a bush...now do you catch my polish logic (I got that from my mothers side of the tree (not bush)! LOL- Henceforth and heretofore I promise solemnly to always refer to it as a huge tall bush...(grin)
