Japanese Maple substitute?

Can anyone recommend a substitute for Japanese Maple, that would be hardy in zone 3? I was on the east coast a couple weeks ago, and saw some of these. I love them! Now only the colors, but the shape of the leaves too.

But I have to say my favorite part about them is the skeleton! I love the twisty curly shape of the trunk and the branches! I would love to find something similar for winter interest here in the nort land!

Try a Black Lace Elderberry (Sambucus niger, Gerten's has them, maybe Bachmanns, too

Pagoda dogwood isn't twisty but has a great architectural horizontal form. Does well as an understory tree.
