That's really cool! What sorts of criteria did you have to meet?

You have to put in six tomatoes - first off, when you are growing them in a very limited space this is VERY hard to have happen. They have to all be uniformly ripe, uniform size, uniform shape, and true to their variety. Then you get into the big room with everyone else laying their stuff out - and it was a GOOD tomato year - and try and make them look good and not-so-lost amongst their peers. It's a challenge! I do it for ME - not to win. I love to see what other varieties everyone else is growing and if I'd like to grow them too.

Suzie, there were some lovely black tomatoes there. There's always a batch of "Mortgage Lifters" that someone wins ribbons with - but you know, I really don't like them as well as some of the ones I grow (since I'm growing for flavor and sauciness). I've determined that next year it's just one Caspian Pink (though I won with those), two German Red Strawberry, two Amish Paste, two Arkansas Travellers - which seems to be the right amount - these are HEAVENLY, and one more attempt at Silvery Fir Tree as mine died but my Grandma's didn't and she really liked them. That's my four dedicated Earth Boxes for tomatoes. HEY! my box of popcorn is doing great too! I actually have maturing ears! You gotta come see sometime very soon Suzie!

I just found out that my neighbor across the fence, who I've always thought was an amazing gardener (but wasn't sure if It was just me) won 3 blue ribbons for tree fruit. 1 for pears and 2 for apples.

She said she had a heck of a time finding 10 each (that's how many you need for fruit) that weren't eaten by bees. We live right in the city near downtown St. Paul.
