IF they are actually the same plants, then my guess is that the heat and drought had something to do with it. In which case, hopefully, they'll be "blue" next season. Is the species normally white or "blue"? Or, there is this other phenomenon:

There are cases where a reversion in one part of a plant some how influences genetics in the rest of the plant, and encourages the rest of the plant to revert too. Might there have been a few whites there last year? If we have a not too hot and dry season next year and color (and size) hasn't returned, then I'd say your stuck with white. Nature is quite complex, and there are other possibilities, but my guess is the rusults would be the same.

They all come from the same plant. It has spread quite a lot. I was just out looking at them and a few of the white ones have a slight blue tinge on the tips if you look very closely at them. I didn't notice any white last year. Guess I will just have to wait until next fall to find out what color they turn out to be.

That is really funny, because my yellow asters are orange this fall. The plant is huge too.

well almost all my Asters have been getting eaten by something, does anyone know what critters love them so much. I pretty much have anything you can imagine out here, Prior Lake/Savage area, rabbitts, squirrles, possums, deer,and so on and so on. any suggestions. I seem to always be planting asters, but not too many survive .I have to plant all my tomatoes in pots behind gates and fences since our neighborhood is loaded with woodchucks and they eat them to the ground.But then the tomatoes in the pots do just fantastic, better than my in the ground ones ever did. Maybe it is the Twin Cities air. I wonder what colors we will get next year. My pink asters are pink and huge.

michele, Nothing has eaten our asters at our cabin and we have a lot of critters. I planted a mix of native flowers and have yet to see blossoms on some of them.I probably will never know what they are.
