I wouldn't prune any rose in the fall. There's always the outside chance the cane may survive the winter. Wait until early April.

If you intend to protect the rose and the long cane won't allow you to do it, then cut the least amount off of it.

I agree with John. I have about 200+ roses and I don't prune any of them, except if they are hybrid teas and I am placing ones over them. Then I only prune to allow the cone to easily slip over them.

Any tender roses I mulch heavily with peat moss and soil, which I mound over the center of the roses and if I have leaves I also dump as many leaves over the rose as possible. Surprisingly if you select the correct roses for your zone they are very tough plants.

I don't prune in fall either!

O.K., I won't prune this fall. But.....we do not want our roses to have that "tree" in the middle next year. If we don't want that, should I cut them off now? It seems the "tree" took all the strength and leaves from the rest of the rose. We just want them back to normal. Do any of you think it unusual for a shub rose to behave in this manner?
