That's a bad saying. You must forget that one, Lori. While the "dress for Thanksgiving" part may be fairly accurate, do you actually remove mulch in the middle of February? Yikes!

I'm gong to try to get started this weekend. I just hope we don't get too much snow on Saturday. It's not a problem to have your mulch between layers of snow, is it?

I did not make it out this weekend-- it was too cold! Since we already have an inch or two of snow on the ground now, and we are getting several more this week, should I just hold my bags of mulched leaves until the January thaw and spread them out then (or whenever the snow melts some)? Or should I go ahead and put a couple of inches of shredded leaves over a few inches of snow now?

Although snow mixed with mulch is not the optimal way, it shouldn't cause any problems. Go ahead and spread your leaves, whenever they won't blow away. But now, the earlier the better. Best scenario, I suppose, would be to spread just before (or as) it is snowing. The snow will hold them down, and the leaves will quickly be covered with white, so the sun won't melt the area like it would if it had a dark colored surface (i.e. leaves).

What type of gardens are you guys winter mulching?
Is it because you have some tender perennials?

I only ask because I've never winter mulched. Well, only with the white stuff mother nature has provided :)
Just seems like a lot of extra work in the fall and spring.

I add leaves in the fall, mostly to continue to amend my heavy, heavy soil. I grow hardy perennials, shrubs, & trees. My job requires high-level analysis and attention to detail; the last thing I want in my garden is to have to be fussy. So in regards to timing, my theory is, when it's good enough for Ma Nature, it's good enough for me!
