The Maine branch of your library is a good place to go looking. Make sure you take a look at the "length of time to harvest" for your plant selections, in consideration of your "shorter than most" growing season.

If you can locate a copy of Bartholomew's "Square Foot Gardening" for basic knowledge, and a copy of Coleman's "Four-Season Harvest" for encouragement (and some really good ideas!), you should be able to do just fine. I own both, well TTT, I own about 6 copies of SFG and 3 of 4-Season because they always seem to be out on loan just when I want to look up some info. If you can find used books, they have all the info, and the $-difference will buy your seeds.

Wow, 10 cents -- that's better than I've been able to do :) That's like finding four big ears on a cornstalk. BTW, I think Coleman is in Maine, so his info should be very applicable for your area.

A visit to your friendly local extension office might be in order. Most states publish locally pertinent planting guides and other information what might be interesting to you.
