Planting a Living 'Mini' Christmas Tree-- When?

We've purchased a small (about 15"), nursery grown Dwarf Alberta Spruce that we want to plant out in the yard after the hoildays. Everything I've read says the tree can only be indoors for 7-10 days. Its on the porch now until Christmas week. The question is when and how to plant it... The tag on the little tree says in "Norther climates" to leave it in the pot and place it somewhere sheltered outside protected by bags of leaves to allow it to have a "period of dormancy" until Spring then plant in the ground. Other things I've read on the web say to prepare a hole now while the ground can still be dug and insulate the hole until after the holiday and then plant it right after. Which method is right?

Good Morning Elleni - Some 30 years ago, this season, we received a foot tall Christmas tree, decorated with Kisses wrapped in assorted colored foil & mini-tinsel garland. I didn't know much, what to do with it at the time ... re-potted her that Spring & kept her in the corner of our porch ... changed her decoration according to the season. She grew wonderfully as she got bigger I got a wine barrel for her home ... she just kept growing & beautifully too!

I had a Finnish Spitz that loved to dig ... dug she did ... deep enough for our dear Alberta ... that was in Fall of 1988 ... in Spring I created a 4-leaf-clover-shaped, herb patch. I hope you enjoy the pix that shows her, these past few years.

Sorry for the long story ... simply love her where she is in *Our Piece of Soil under Iowa Skies* ... plant her as you would a small tree or bush w/ good soil/compost mix & she'll be happy!!!
