Help! Why is my plant wilting?

When my mother passed away, my sisters and I all took a plant from the funeral to keep. I live in a tiny apartment that only has a north facing window, but the other building blocks what little sunlight I would be getting. Within a day of the plant being at my house, the plant had completely wilted. I bought a light bulb that said it was made for plant growth and put that light on the plant. Ive propped the leaves on boxes so that they have some support. maybe I shouldn't have done that. So far it's been on the plant or 16 hours and there hasn't been a change. Have you used artificial light? What do you recommend? Should I keep the light on it constantly until it perks up? Should I keep the light on when the sun is up and turn it off at night? I'm at a complete loss. Any advice is appreciated. I really don't want that plant to die.
