ground water killing trees

We recently had to have several trees cut down that had died. We think what may have killed the trees is water because in the area where the trees were, if we dig a hole about 2 feet deep, we hit running water. When I say running, you can actually see the water moving. We would like to replace these trees with some new trees that would provide shade during the summer. Any ideas on what may grow here. The soil is otherwise good above the water. Not sure what is below the water, possibly rock.
