Hi, miami! First of all, I'm going to suggest that you visit the Container Forum with this question. You'll find lots of good folks over there. That is the forum in which you will find thorough discussions about your potting mix options, containers, etc.

That said, I'm afraid that you may need to have a reality check, darn it all. Most herbs, veggies, and fruit-bearing plants require what is called a 'full sun' exposure. In general terms, this means (at the very least) 6 hours of direct sunlight. More is better.

There are plenty of other kinds of plants that would do quite well in your situation, but I don't think that you will be putting much food on the table.
