Dwarf boxwoods are the typical plant used for this purpose but you could also use a low growing Japanese holly (Ilex crenata). If this is a open sunny area, English lavender could work or for a bit of a change up, something like the groundcover roses, like the Carefree or Knockout series or Carpet roses.

I wouldn't mix it up if it was a hedge that lined both sides of eth walk. If only on one side, then the mix of plants would not look quite as out of place. And then you are really not limited except by size. A visit to a better local garden center could help you select shrubs that will remain in the proper scale.
