Amending soil under evergreen

Hello All,

I have a bit of a challenge in my front yard as I have 2 large trees that are shading 75% of the area. One is a huge and dense maple that is beautiful, the other is an evergreen that is pretty raggedy. The maple will stay, the evergreen will go. The area under the evergreen is dry, loose and dead looking, and nothing, including weeds, is growing there. Once the evergreen is gone, that side of the yard will get a good amount of sun since it is south of the maple. What I need to know is how to amend the soil so that what I plant there will have a good chance at surviving.

Christine
