Pea seeds may be planted directly into the ground on St. Patricks Day. As soon as your indoor pea plants are hardened off, they mey go into the ground.

The reason I asked is that we are still getting hard freezes (post St Paddy's Day). Overnight lows were around 17 degrees F last night. I'm assuming that would kill my peas.

Am I wrong?

Peas planted directly into the soil will not germinate until the soil temperature is suitable. The peas should be able to withstand freezing temperatures but 17 degrees is very low. That is why weather observation is important. My pussy willows did not bloom until the middle of March rather than in February. That gives me a clue that the soil is cold and plants should be planted accordingly. Peas can be planted inside but you must be prepared to maintain the plants if the weather is bad. At the point you describe, the peas are going to be very difficult to transplant. And it will take a while to harden the plants before transplanting. You might consider starting over.
