Low Maintenance in Florida?

Hey - My pool is almost finished and I need to start landscaping around it. I was wondering if anyone had advice on plants that don't shed too much, don't have large root systems (to damage my pool plumbing and what not) don'tneed a lot of attention but do need a lot of sun... and will still look lush and tropical around my pool.

I'm very new to the gardening-thing so any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I remember seeing a night blooming cereus - next to a pool in the desert, soaking up the sun. They are also "at home" in Florida Keys - as I've seen them blooming there. They don't shed leaves and are very drought tolerant.

The blooms are gorgeous. It would be my choice.

Thanks Bejay! I actually re-posted this in the "Florida Gardening" forum and got a ton of responses. I'm going to check up on the cereus you recc'd.
