It is certainly possible! Chances of contamination from petrol additives is minimal unless they spilled lots instead of using it. If you find spots that are discolored darker because of oil, you can dig that out and replace it with mulch worked into your uncontaminated soil. Not a pleasant task, depending on how much and how far down you have to dig. If plants or grass are already there, they will certainly avoid the oily spots, too. I hope all you find are oily rags.

I would not grow anything you plan to eat there...no veggies or fruits.

I think of 9it were contaminated with anything other than junk....you would see areas where nothing would grow.
I know someone who rented land for a go cart track....they held races for about 10 years and the soil on the track had to be dug out and replaced before they could even grow grass.
If things grow and you don't find oily spots in the ground....I wouldn't worry.

"The first significant study showed that a strain of Oyster mushrooms could break down heavy oil. A trial project at a vehicle storage center controlled by the Washington State Dept. of Transportation (WSDOT) enlisted the techniques from several, competing bioremediation groups.
The soil was blackened with oil and reeked of aromatic hydrocarbons. We inoculated one berm of soil approximately 8 feet x 30 feet x 3 feet high with mushroom spawn while other technicians employed a variety of methods, ranging from bacteria to chemical agents. After 4 weeks, the tarps were pulled back from each test pile. The first piles employing the other techniques were
unremarkable. Then the tarp was pulled from our pile, and gasps of astonishment and laughter welled up from the observers. The
hydrocarbon-laden pile was bursting with mushrooms! Oyster mushrooms up to 12 inches in diameter had formed across the pile.
Analyses showed that more than 95% of many of the PAH (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) were destroyed, reduced to non-toxic components, and the mushrooms were also free of any petroleum products."
