Welcome. Gardening can be a lot of work. I can understand crying over the loss of remaining watermelon plants, but you will learn to deal with the setbacks. Nothing tastes as god as something right out of your garden.

Couple weeks ago I picked over 8 pounds of green beans. Delicious! Blanched & froze 12 packets of 4 servings for winter. Mmmmmm.

Good luck. Maybe buy some netting to cover small plants to protect from rabbits/deer/etc.

Remember someone said ''Don't put all your eggs in one basket.''? Likewise don't plant all your seed at one time. You could probably save a second planting of melon by encircling the newly planted seedlings with a ring fashioned with a solo cup or see Transplanting Tips - An easy way to protect plants is to fashion a collar from newspaper:
