Japanese Maple Tree...

I have wanted one for a long time. Today, I just stopped at a nursery and saw one beautiful tree almost 5 to 6 feet wide and 4 feet tall for 800 dollars and they charge 400 for planting. Is it worth it? Or I should get a tiny one and babysit that for next 3 or 4 years? What would you say is appropriate amount if I want a decent sized plant and which nursery has reasonable price? Any suggestions?

You can buy Japanese Maple trees at Lowes or HomeDepot for as cheaply as $29.95. They are about 2-3 feet tall. They even have named cultivars (there are hundreds of different JM cultivars) for that price and $99-125 also. The $99-125 ones are about 4 feet or more. This would be a cheaper way to get introduced to JMs in my opinion. Last year we bought a Seiryu that was 5-6 feet tall and two each of Villa Taranto and Beni Otake 4-6 feet tall for less than $50 at clearance sales. I'd look around. There are bargains out there. Plant them yourself and enjoy them as they're growing.
