I used to start nasturtiums in peat pots (Jiffy 7s) and then pop them in the soil after the last frost date. Now I just pop the seeds in the soil after the frost date. According to what I have read about them, they don't like to be transplanted. Like some abuse, no fertilizer, and like cooler weather. Good luck!

Don't worry nasturtiums are among the easiest plants. However, they will die with a frost. I usally start them in mid May outside. They should bloom in six weeks later. they don't stop until fall frosts.

Nasturtiums can be started right in the ground. I grew them last year. The only problem was the soil was a little too rich and that cuts down on the flowers (you tend to get more foliage than blooms). They like rather poor sandy soils. Mine were Empress of India and they were really colorful.

If they like crappy soil, have I got a yard for them to thrive in! I have them in peatmoss cup thingies and they aren't quite ready. I will toss them in in a couple weeks. And begin the prayer vigil!!

When the blooms die, or are dying, are you to cut, pinch, or just leave the blooms? Please be specific as to where on the plant you are to do so. (how far down, etc.) Also, are you to do it when they are completley dead? I am new to nasturshums!

I don't do anything with my "nasturtiums" but if I were to deadhead, I would just pinch them.

I have a large patch of nasturshums, huge leaves, and not a single Flower. Not even a bud! What is going on? I put some mushroom compost on the soil, does that make it too rich? Thanks for your help.

They prefer a "lean" soil, i.e., not much, if any, fertilizer. If you've ever been to San Francisco, you may recall seeing them in full flower cascading down hillsides just like wildflowers. Ergo, no need to fertilize.
