Transplanting a grumpy hydrangea

I have a grumpy hydrangea that's about 2.5' tall and been in it's current location about 18 months. It think it's getting too much heat and sun, the flowers are beautiful, but they get droopy on hot/humid days. So I was thinking to dig it up in October or November (I think that's when it went dormant last year) and try to move it to a shadier spot. Do I need to prune it before I move it? Or do you think it won't need that since it will be dormant?

I wouldn't prune it if you are going to wait for dormancy. Be sure to get a good sized root ball.

Mine seem to grump at me - for not keeping their soil moist! If you can't poke your figure into the soil beside the root area, please give it water. Only way I know to hush the grumping.

I found this method works great to keep hydrangeas from drooping:
Spread a deep cover of grass clippings around the hydrangea's base. I make mine at least 6-8 in in depth. The clippings help keep the plants "feet cool" and hold moisture for long periods o f time. I use this method on my zebra grasses too and it works well.
