My kousa dogwoods with Southern exposure just started to bloom. My northern exposure tree has yet to start.

Thanks for the reply. I'm in Tewksbury, so we should have pretty similar conditions. Question, though: which emerges first, flowers or leaves?

My 3 yr old, western exposure has had leaves for a few weeks, just now blooming. Am upset because I've been keeping it protected from deer and rabbits so well and then nicked it with the weed whacker...

It sounds like you have a dead plant - they started leafing out weeks ago which they do ahead of flowering.

Sounds dead to me too. I have two that have had leaves for I think a few weeks now. I'm not far from Tewksbury.
