No way to tell where you live, which makes a difference. Unless you have a very bright spot where humidity is good, you'll likely be disappointed with the results of growing indoors. Results would be better south of Mason/Dixon, however. They are heavy feeders & in summer, appreciate regular doses of a fertilizer with the first number the highest (Nitrogen). However, when light levels are low, it's best to go easy on the nitrogen, as it will produce weak floppy growth. Many remove the root structure from the container, carefully remove the soil, allow it to dry for a few days & store in dry peat for the winter, but it's difficult to advise w/o knowing where you live.

Plants don't care where their elemental nutrients come from. Brand, or organic/inorganic choices are a personal matter, but there is much to be learned about what fertilizer is appropriate and when to apply.

Here is what I would do: If you're growing in front of a south facing window or in a sun room, I would use a balanced fertilizer sparingly right now. If light levels aren't really high, your plant will have more of a tendency to rest during the winter & won't need near as much Nitrogen as if it was in a bright location. If that is the case, I would use a fertilizer blend suggested for tomatoes. It would be lower in N than most. When it begins to grow well in May, I would switch to a fertilizer with the first number the highest. You'll be able to apply more frequently than directions suggest because they are heavy feeders. Just be sure you flush the soil of accumulating fertilizer salts regularly if you use a chemical fertilizer.

Do caladiums stay green all year? I though they had to go into dormancy at some point. I've only grown them outside where the first frost kills the leaves and then I dig them up and store indoors over the winter.

Only if they're green to start with. ;o) They do ok as houseplants where adequate light, warmth, and humidity are in good supply.
