This is a plant with very agressive root system. It won't be happy in a very small container for very long. If the pot that it's in suits the location, you could divide the plant into two.

In the meantime, cutting back those wandering roots won't hurt it, but you'll need to address the situation before too long. Asparagus ferns are one of those plants that will literally break out of their containers!

Thanks for the advice...I repotted it this afternoon and watered it well. It was so amazing to see all the roots that had formed!

I doubt that you would need to do it that often. In the Spring, why don't you prise it out of the container and see how those roots are doing?

Remember, you can root prune or divide these plants quite nicely.
