bugs in my money tree

I keep my money tree on a plate of small pebbles with water. Today when I added water, I noticed what appeared to be THOUSANDS of VERY TINY white worm-like bugs scrambling around the rocks. I freaked out and put the plant outside and do not want to bring it back in my house! Can anyone tell me what they could be and how they got on the rocks? This is (or should I say was) my first plant by-the-way, and I was able to save only one of the five braided trunks and was so happy until I noticed the bugs.
