We use black plastic on raised beds with drip irrigation and they put off much more per plant that they did before without it.

Question: are you talking about plastic to make the soil hotter ie attract sun? Have never heard of this. Can you give anymore details?

We plant in black plastic to eliminate as much weeding as possible and yes it helps produce nicer tomatoes and peppers. This year I bought woven ground cover and put it between the rows, too. As cold as the season was I think it was the only reason I got peppers this year.
