There's lots of information online. The Latin name is Phoenix dactylifera. It grows 40-75 feet tall and is a native of northern Africa, hardy in zones 9 - 11, but I guess it can be grown in zone 8 with protection.

Frankly, I think you'd be better off with a fig which isn't hardy here either 100% but it can be done....and is much more managable in size.

There's nothing to say you can't try it though.

Date palms aren't something you'd want to have to bother bringing in every fall and taking out each spring--they have horrific spines at the bases of their fronds and hurt like hell if you are punctured.

Plus, date palms really need heat across a LONG summer for progressive growth.
