I have an Erica "Kramer's Red" growing quite nicely in neutral soil (with limestone gravel mulch!), although it's in a rock garden with perfect drainage. It's been in place for four years now.

I'm trying a Calluna this year in a much different site, virtually a peat bed with a low pH. So far so good, but time will tell.

Thanks for the reply, Scott. This gives me some hope...I think you're right that good drainage, especially over-winter, is critical. A raised bed of some type will probably be necessary. Do you add any amendments to maintain the low ph in the peat bed?

Yeah, I scatter soil sulfer two or three times a year. Fertilome makes it, and it's pretty cheap. From extensive discussions and reading, and experience, I'm convinced that is the best method of lowering pH.
