If you do decide to plant seeds (peas, corn, beans, etc) you sometimes can do that about the middle of May, with the thinking being that by the time the seeds come up, it's about the third week in May (Victoria Day long weekend). It can depend on the individual year and the weather though. For seeding crops where the seeds may rot in cold wet soil (cucumbers, melons), probably the May long weekend is best.

Yeah, there can still be a risk of frost after the May long weekend, but some years there isn't a frost after the first week in May, at least not a hard one. Just be prepared to cover things.

If you are planting squash or melon plants (cucumber too), sometimes it is just as quick planting seeds and having them come up than buying small seedlings ready to transplant. The reason being is these plants usually don't take to transplanting easily so sort of 'stall' and don't grow for a bit when transplanted (unless, the nursery sells them in peat pots where you just pluck them into the ground, pot and all, this limits the transplant shock.)
