Moving Sweet Autumn Clematis

There is sweet autumn clematis growing on a chain link fence that will be replaced with a wood fence in the next two months. The plant does have some green leaf bud(?) swelling and some green leaves- but not many. Can I severely cut back the plant and dig up the roots to move it? Should I keep it in a pot until warmer or could I possible replant it now? I don't need it to bloom this year, but enjoy the smell enough to want to keep it in the yard for future years.

Thanks!

Andria
