Okra ????

I thought i'd try okra this year.I am married to a sweet yankee man who does not like even fried okra. And of course like everyone else i try to watch how much fried foods I eat.So is there a non slimy okra non fried okra version of okra I don't know about??? I do love the flavor of it.

    Leava,
I can't help you with the slime. In my mind, slime is a good thing because it makes the cornmeal stick before I fry it.

My neighbor was in a boat similar to yours, and she prepared the Tomatoes and Okra recipe from the Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook.

I may be the Bubba Gump of okra, as I like it grilled, pickled and raw as well.

Do you have okra seed? I just acquired a large quantity of Perkins Long Pod seed and I'd be happy to drop some in your onion box.

    Leava,

Last year was the first time I tried grilled okra. Initially, it just sounded wrong to this southern girl. I mean if it's not breaded and fried, it can't be okra now can it?

At first, I was skeptical but tried it anyway. Boy was I surprised. It was fabulous! After picking and washing, I would put the pods in a large bowl or baking pan and give it a good amount of olive oil immediately followed by our favorite spices. You can make it as spicy or not as your family prefers. I have one of those 'Creole' seasonings and seem to navigate back to that one most frequently. Plop them on the grill and turn to grill on both sides. I repeat -- delicious!

Later in the season I started putting the okra pods on skewers (like you would if you were grilling several shrimp) which made the grilling much easier not having to chase each individual pod around the grates.

I don't think the 'slimy' is even a factor since you're grilling. The seasonings really bring out the okra flavor.

seedmama i do love the pickled too...i would be thrilled with just 6-10 seeds of the okra depending on what you can spare and thank you for thinking of it travelling with the onions......you mentioned grilled which i never thought of.and i will search out the tomato/okra recipe.jeff loves tomatoes in any form........

lynn thank you for the instructions on the how to grill.kind of reminds me of the oven "green bean french fries" which we loved when i tried them.......

since okra grows well here i really want to find a way to make it so jeff likes it too.........i dunno though,he does not like gravy so there may be no hope :)

    Leava,

To use one of soonergrandmom's terms, I have a "big honkin' bag" of Perkins Long Pod. I only got it yesterday, or I would have included it in my swap offerings. Anybody else? There's plenty.

Leava, I think I put Stewart's Zeebest in everyone's package. Did you not get one?

Try baking okra, too, after a bit of olive oil & seasoning of choice. Just leave them whole and munch on them like fries. I'm not an okra fan but baked I've come to tolerate. I'll still grow it for my mother and other folks who yearn for it and then try to give away every last bit. LOL However, if some is left, I'll choose the baking option.

carol,i did get zeebest,i was thinking trying small amounts of different okras.......i just now made a list by category of all the seeds from the swap and wow i hardly need to order much since i have leftovers of my own.

diane baked sounds great too.......i can use the toaster oven since my kitchen does not have ac so we don't use the oven in summer

this is all making me hungry for summer veggies :)

    Leava,

We've got A/C but do everything possible to manage the bill. I take my toaster oven out on the back porch for the summer. I use the crock pot there, and I also use the burner on the outdoor grill for woking the dog.

I've gone from 2 kinds of okra to 6. I'm using the snow days to rehearse in front of the mirror. "You did this to yourself. You did this to yourself."
