Well I always was under the impression that Hostas do better in part shade so that may be part of the problem?

That's what I was afraid of but they look so great on each side of my front door. Guess I should move them - darn!

Usually, however, in Northern climates such as ours, hostas can take more sun, as long as their watering needs are met. By the front door might be a dry spot which requires regular watering, which I am sure you are doing, but be sure to water deep and well and then let dry out somewhat between waterings.

Having said that, however, maybe Rolande is right. Obviously I don't know your setup, but if they are against a bright south wall and all day sun this might be too intense for them.

Any chance maybe they got over fertilized, or some chemical on them?

Sum and Substance can take all day sun as long as u give it enough water.

I have mine in all day afternoon sun but I water it almost every day. It sounds like a bit of sunburn caused by not enough watering. U didn't get the leaves wet on a sunny day did u, cause water on leaves gets magnified in the sun and will burn the hostas leaves. Also if u get a lot of wind there u will need to water the hosta more. I know people in hotter zones than u that have their Sum and Substance in full day sun and it does fine with enough water.

You don't have to move them though!

PS: If they get frost the leaves somettimes don't change colour until weeks later.

Thank you everyone for your help. We were gone for 2 weeks and that is when they started looking bad. I think it must be the watering because they didn't get much then. From now on I will water them at the base on hot days.

One has to keep them watered. If we are away, we have to get a neighbour to water plants for us. It sure is a pain though.
