I have two pink spireas and one blooms very nicely and the other one is just starting now and never gets very nice.The nice one is in a partially shady spot.

Clethra alnifolia is a very pretty shrub that blooms well in 3/4 sun. I have the plant for many years (10+)and it blooms for me in July. As my garden is quite shady, it is in 1/2 shade and doesn't bloom as well as it should if I would give it more sun. It blooms for about 2 weeks - I wouldn't say profusely though. It is slow growing and after more than 10 years, my plant is about 6 feet tall.

Re: message from clairdo2 - Clethra Alnifolia and spirea are two completely different plants. I have a Clethra - it is white, not pink. It is in approximately 3/4 shade, as opposed to 3/4 sun as indicated by Mary V from Montreal. Maybe that's why I don't get very many blooms. But they smell wonderful! The problem is: how to give the plant the moisture it likes in full sun? Not many of us have full sun with moist conditions, right? Probably the only way is to create one of those "fake" bogs... my friend made one and gets great results. It is a bit tricky to do. What do other people think????
