Pepper Question for Jay (or others)

Jay, I have a package of peppers marked Calypso O P. Your annotation says "Ornamental also", but the only thing I found online said that it is ONLY ornamental. What's the "official skinny" from the real NM pepper grower? I need to know if it goes in the garden or the flower bed. LOL

    Carol,
The grower/breeder/enabler I buy most of my pepper seeds from sent these as a freebie. He starts, sells and grows 125-135 pepper varieties every year. Not sure how many he has seeds for. So a true pepper king. I will add his statement about this variety.

8085 days. the op version is slightly larger than the hybrid. Compact, spreading plants grow up to 10-12"tall and become covered with 75, 1" wide x 1.25 to 2" long green, upright, conical chiles that turn brilliant orange when ripe, delicious, hot citrus like flavor, may have Habenero parentage.?, Potted plants 8-10" tall. Garden plants as tall as 15". Tasty, tangy, edible "ornamental" peppers just too good to just look at.

I never grew it. Why I passed on the seeds. Was going to and never did. I've had good results with all of his seeds. And have found his descriptions to usually be very accurate. A warning his hot is usually "hot". Hope this helps. Had thought they would be a nice pickling type. But they never made it too my grow list. Jay

In a hurry heading to the dentist. Didn't proofread the previous post. It should be 80-85 days.

Thanks Jay, That's good enough for me. Man, it seems like you are going to the doctor, eye doctor, and dentist a lot recently. Are you getting a complete overhaul? LOL

    Carol,
LOL. It had probably been 4 years since I visited the dentist. This one is in Hooker where Jan lives and a great small town dentist. Eye doctor was a regular visit. With my sinus and allergy problems I'm usually a frequent visitor with the family doctor.

Will be interested how you like the peppers. I had thought of planting them in the front flower bed and using them as an ornamental and then eating the fruit. Jay

    Carol,

All ornamental peppers are edible if you like hot, hot, hot, hot, burn-a-hole-in-your-tongue flavor. I always taste an ornamental pepper the first year I grow that variety, and have never found one that is not too hot for me to eat. They're great, though, for drying and grinding up into a pepper powder for seasoning or into flakes for the same purpose. Jay probably could handle the heat of the ornamental types, but I can't.

Thanks Dawn. Chili pepper would be OK with me, but a comment on 'the other list' made them sound as if you couldn't use them for food. I need to grab a sandwich and get back to work. We have census people all over the area now and they are as ready for spring as gardeners. They are working outside at 36 degrees today. Tulsa listed their average for the last three months as 34.8, the 5th coldest winter in the hundred years they have been keeping records, and we are further north and a bit cooler normally.

For a long time I didn't know for sure that ornamental peppers were edible, but then I read that they were, and I have 'sampled' them ever since.

It has been a really cold winter here too and it may end up as our snowiest or second snowiest winter ever in Love County...the local paper said it was the snowiest ever but the OCS data doesn't agree. Regardless, it has been very cold. Even our warmest days have been cooler than average.

We have three sunny days in a row this week. Now, if only we can get a little something accomplished before the severe T-storm/tornado type weather arrives and starts pounding on us.

Y'all sound busy up there. I don't even think we've received our census form in the mail yet, but we did get the letter saying the census form was coming soon.

I hoped to be planting this week, and then we got over an inch of rain at our house yesterday....just when we were almost mud-free. I'm going to try to plant tomorrow as it is just squishy, icky mud today and needs to dry out some first.

Since it is too muddy to plant, I may go shopping this afternoon. I am climbing the walls from boredom.

    Don't work too hard!

Dawn, more than likely your census form will be hand delivered to your home. Oklahoma had a very bad census statistic in 2000 and lost a lot of federal money (and a Representive) because of it. Although some are being mailed, many rural areas are being delivered and addresses are being verified at the time of delivery. Most of this will occur during the month of March. It is so important that everyone send back their form and get counted.

As those of us who search census records for family history know, census information is not released to the archives for 72 years, so the latest available census available for research is 1930. However, the government uses statistical data ONLY from the census as soon as it is collected and many funds are distributed based on the number of people living within an area. It's important and I have been surprised at how many people don't understand anything about it's use.

There is a good explanation here.
