Fragrant hostas

So Sweet is supposed to be fragrant. Mine is in it's second year and has almost no fragrance. If you stick your nose right in the flower, you can get a faint whiff. Does it develop with age? Does it just vary a lot from plant to plant? I really wanted a plantaginea for it's fragrance, but now am doubting my choice.

Also, I have a 1st year Invincible that is putting up scapes right now. Isn't it kind of late? (I wonder if it's going to be fragrant?)

You should post a pic so we can see it... I bought my first So Sweet this year... was a nursed TC.. pretty good size actually and had a good fragrance to it... As far as good fragrance you have a lot of options... I would recommend any in the Fragrant Bouquet, Guacamole, Stained Glass group... lots there to choose from, newer Fragrant Queen.... I also have classics like Royal Standard and Honeybells which have lots of fragrance..... I cut all my scapes this year about midbloom and brought inside... just so I could smell that smell all day lol.... and first year plantings will make your bloom times vary to some extent...

plantiginea itself is the queen.. and loves hot zones .. 6 inch pure white flowers scented of gardenia ....

it is the mother gene plant of all others .... as you move away from mommas full dna.. scent is variable .... and nearly no others are fully pure white ...

i thought so sweet was one of the better ones... maybe i will go check ....

    regardless ...

i dont know why you just dont get plantaginea ...

I have 'So Sweet' and it is very fragrant but I can't smell it unless I am sticking my nose it in. It does smell like gardenias to me, I had no idea hostas could be so fragrant until I stuck my nose in it a couple years ago while weeding.

This is my first year Invincible. I got it in June, bare rooted. I hope it's fragrant. We'll know in a few days. It looks so odd, almost like a mini. How long will it take to develop the Invincible look that is so gorgeous.

bkay, I would not be surprised to have you report there's no fragrance from the flowers of this plant. If it is supposed to be 'Invincible' I would have expected to see a certain amount of waviness to the leaves, and though it's kinda hard to tell in the pictures with all that water on the leaves I would also have expected a glossier appearance to the leaves. Can't help but feel this is not as billed, and until it matures a bit more it may well remain a NOID.

That doesn't surprise me, somehow. The plant in the pot behind it was supposed to be Wide Brim. I ordered 5 Wide Brims and got 4 Wide Brims and this one. They replaced it immediately. Fortunately, they all look healthy. I'll enjoy them, anyway. (I like the solid greens.) They weren't expensive, so I got what I paid for. I'll just have to put Invincible back on my list.

Royal Standard! Grows big fast and OMG is SO fragrant. The only downside is that it is a rather plain green, but exciting compared to the ubiquitous Lancifolia/Purple Lady Fingers that we have here in Massachusetts/Rhode Island.

I have been growing H. Iron Gate Glamour in a 3 gal. pot for two years, and it is the most fragrant, vigorous variety of hosta in my collection. Blooms early August here. Started from one eye and is ready to divide into three plants already.

Thanks, I've been wanting to increase my fragrant hostas, but was very disappointed in So Sweet. It's a beautiful plant, just almost no fragrance.

Where did you buy Iron Gate Glamour? I don't think I've noticed it anywhere. It should do well here, as it's from two of the most heat tolerant types of hostas.

bkay, I buy most of my hostas from Sebright Gardens, Brooks, OR. google their web site. I have never been disappointed. THey sell generously sized, vigorous, healthy plants. About Iron Gate Glamour, their catalog says: Wonderful olive green leaves with widely margined creamy yellow edges that age to white in summer. Fragrant pale lavender flowers mid summer into autumn. Partial sun to light shade. Medium Large hosta. Price is $8. The wonderful thing about IGG besides the beautiful fragrance is a long bloom time. Just keeps blossoming.
