You can't grow avacados in the ground in Oklahoma. They are only hardy to zone 10 and would freeze here.

I bought one of the Don Gillogy or whatever it is for a container. $50 bucks plus. Total waste of money. It was a cutting that wasn't even rooted well yet. Died right off the bat.

I have a few grown from seed. Will probably but a "Haas" at some point to graft onto these to get a good quality fruit tree.

How big do you let your avocado trees grow? Do you move them outside for the summer and then prune them down to a smaller size to move them back into the greenhouse in the winter?

I have an avocado plant that I grew from a seed in 2001. It is very special to me and has a lot of sentimental value. (Long story...) Anyway, I've grown it in a pot all these years. It goes dormant every winter, then comes back with a new stem each spring. One winter I got tired of wagging it into the greenhouse, so I left it out in the garden to die, buried in a hole in its pot, mulched well. Imagine my surprise the next spring ('06) when I noticed a stalk growing up out of the pot. I could not believe that avocado plant came back after being left outside in my garden all winter. We had several low temps that winter of 6*. Now I love that plant more than ever before, and I'll never leave it outside to "die" again! It never grows very tall, nor is a very pretty plant, but I love it all the same. :)

My seedlings are small. Better to graft with that way. I'll probably train them as small standards so they will be easier to move around.

That's great that it is doing so well, but I suspect one of these days we will have a really bitterly cold winter that may get it. You might be able to get it through a really bitter cold spell by wrapping it, if we ever get that type of winter again.
