Well, if you don't get any surprises when you're gardening, you're prolly not doing it right. :D

Dorothy, I'm planting the last of my potatoes today. I've been trying to vole-proof their planting bed, and it has taken me a while.

I figured out how to get my planting done during the wildfire season. If I go out to the garden without my fire paging radio and without my phone, I won't hear the pager go off and I won't hear the phone app siren that also alerts me to a fire. I might hear firefighters honking their horns as they drive by the house to alert me to the fire, but I can pretend I don't hear them. : ) I know it is terrible that I would ignore a page and skip a fire, but I was out every day last week and I didn't get any real gardening done. This week I am busy making up for lost time, but of course, I had to be careful in the lower part of the garden because it rained a lot last week and I can sink ankle deep in mud if I get off the pathways at the higher end of the garden. With a lot of sun and wind this week, the higher end of the garden is dry enough that I can work in it pretty easily, but at the lower end, there's too much mud, so I have to tread easily down there.

I'm sowing carrot seed today too and that will be the last of the root crops, except for sweet potatoes....and their planting time is a long way off, of course.

I feel like I am starting to catch up and am getting to the place in planting where I should be right now---finishing up cool season plantings, and plunging ahead with warm season plantings, before I don't have enough sense to wait any longer.
